SUMMER PLAID

A couple of weeks ago I styled a look in black so this week I've taken things in the opposite direction and focused on styling a look featuring vivid colours. Vivid colours are this summer's hottest trend and while black is chic and safe, colours can express your indivdual creativity and flare in unique ways.

Vibrant hues flatter every skin tone it's all about finding one that's best for you -- so go bright or go home and change into some saturated summer shades.

PURE JEANIUS

It has been said that if you manage to find the perfect pair of jeans that you should hang on to them or buy multiple pairs. Denim is an integral part of a building a well rounded wardrobe.  A great pair of jeans can do more than just shape your butt, it can be the piece that makes a look appear effortless. Shopping for a pair can be daunting given all the options out there in stores but I've come up with a few tips to make your experience a little easier:

1. Never assume that if a friend or celebrity swears by particular pair that they will also be right for you.

Finding the perfect pair is all about trial and error. Be prepared to slide your legs in and out of many pairs of jeans. It helps to bring a trusted friend with you because having the sales girl ask " How are you doing in there?" just adds unnecessary pressure and it often becomes cringe-worthy.

2. Look for the right 'stretch'.

There's a balance to be had here -- you want something that has a bit of stretch because it makes wearing the pants a lot more comfortable however if you buy something that's too stretchy it won't create the elongated lines to make your legs look longer and thinner. Be sure to check the amount of stretch in each pair. Anything more than 2% should fit like a glove, but this may vary based on your size and build. The most important thing is to not buy anything too loose or else you'll be washing them until the shrinkage is just right.

3. Pocket placement is everything!

Where the back pockets fall ultimately shape your butt. Pockets that are too low may make your butt look saggy, pockets that are too close together can make it look like you a 'wide load'. The same goes with pockets that are too small. Thisis where having a honest friend is key, you'll get confirmation from a girlfriend when your booty looks good or bad.

LACEY DAY IN WINTER WHITE

Growing up, I was often led to believe that black = slimming and white = unflattering. That seemingly simple formula dictated a lot of the fashion choices I made early on and while the looks weren't bad I found that I was severely limiting myself. I made my way out of this comfort zone a bit this past Spring but with the year now coming to an end I find myself once again creeping back but I won't allow myself to do that; After all, 'Tis the season to try new things!

I've learned that choosing my outfits comes down to a lot more than black or white. "Winter White" really refers to wearing white, but with warmer undertones. Different shades of white (e.g. Cream) combined with something like a cappuccino coloured sweater creates contrast.

This week's look answers the question of black vs. white with a "Why not both?" I love the contrast between the two colours, not to mention it is also foolproof! With the holidays soon over we will be forced to face the 'dark' days of winter, so why not use one of the few colours that can lighten it up? Just be careful around that red wine ;)

From the Desk to Dinner

For some, putting together a great look for a holiday party with friends is fun and has become second nature. For others however, putting together a stylish look can be challenging and even stressful.

Taking the look you rock at your desk at work to a fancy dinner or event can be tricky in the Winter months. It's a bit unnerving to be at an event wondering if something is too flashy or if a hem is too short.  However, fear not: The Black Tux has created a holiday style guide to help you navigate through your closet and pick something on point.

Today, I used their handy guide to put together a "professional" holiday look. This is a style I can get through the work day in and still feel like a 'boss' when I go out.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE

Christmas Eve arrives in TEN DAYS!

As each day passes the pressure builds to make sure that every name is checked off your Christmas Gift list. Some people enjoy the thrill and busyness of last-minute shopping however I am not one of them. However whether you enjoy the pressure of late holiday shopping or you're just looking for that one last gift I've put together a list of some of my favorite gift ideas that can hopefully help you cross a few names off of that list!

For the Scentual Friend: Marc Jacob Decadence

Marc Jacob Decadence - Perfume is powerful; it has the ability to lift your mood, make you feel beautiful and our brains tend to associate certain scents with specific moments in time. I think it's important to have a signature scent. This one from MJ is sensual, luxurious and glamorous just like the bottle it's packaged in.

For the Outdoor Girl: Hunter Redefined Back Strap Rain Boot

This is a sleeker design than the iconic original. It has a more tailored silhouette, which creates a slimmer appearance. This is perfect for the girl who likes to be prepared for all weather conditions: they are great in the rain and snow and work just as well on dry

For the Globe Trotter: Escape Canvas Utility Bag

The perfect gift for the Jet-setter in your life, this bag is great for any weekend adventure. It's sturdy, secured with its buckle straps and it comes with a water resistant bottom. Personalize it with monogramming for that extra special touch.

For the "Hopeless Romantic: Forever 21 Love Ear Pins

In almost every group of friends there is the one girl who wears her heart on her sleeve and anywhere else she can. These earrings are lightweight, cute and make a great stocking stuffer.  She will fall head over heels for this one.

For the girl who is All Business: Kate Spade Business Card Holder

She means business and loves to talk shop, so let her work space say the same. The design is simple, sweet and gets straight to the point.

For the Gym Rat: Nike "Just Do It" Leggings

Look good and feel even better in this workout legging. The Dri-FIT material helps keep you comfortable, dry and motivated.

Be sure to conquer the boutiques and malls on a good night's rest and remember to never shop on a empty stomach. There are no benefits to being a hangry shopper on a mission.

BABY IT'S COLD OUTSIDE

Brrr, it's cold out there!

But just because it's cold it doesn't mean getting dressed up can't be as fun or as stylish as it was earlier in the year. Don't get me wrong, there are days where I miss the ease of the one and done sundress however, the colder winter-like weather brings on the endless layering possibilities.

For me leather pants and a cute sweater and pair of fabulous footwear is a great starting point. Swapping the classic cotton black pants for leather ones not only elevates your look, but it's more often than not a better match with a lot of my other pieces. If this is something you want to try you need to be sure to try them on while you are out shopping. That seems simple enough but there have been so many occasions where people 'know' their size and just buy pants to only find out that it doesn't quite fit the way they thought it would. Remember: comfort and warmth need to rank as your highest priorities when it comes to curating your personal winter style.

Another thing to remember is that what's on the inside is just as important as what's on the outside. Your wardrobe should have a classic coat in neutral that will serve as your bread and butter all season. I recommend trying some other pieces such as the blanket scarf I styled below. The scarf is great because it can be used to wrap up, or it can be worn on its own if it's not too cold out there. The one I styled this week is reversible which lets me use the same piece to create two completely different looks whenever I feel like it.

FAREWELL TO FALL

Temperatures are really beginning to fall here and as recently as this past weekend we even spent some time below freezing temperature! With that said it's time to start layering up.

The art of layering is important because it allows you to keep warm but remain stylish. Bundling up in light layers is practical because each 'layer' that you add allows you to use your creativity to express your own style. In my opinion, it really comes down to combining the right colours, textures, and proportions to prevent you from looking like an urban Eskimo.

I like to start with a basic white because it is nearly guaranteed to compliment whatever you add on top. This week's look pairs a layered ribbed poncho with a removable fur collar. To help balance the volume that the faux fur top gives I kept it sleek with leather leggings and a pointed pump. The leggings and pointed pumps help elongate my legs because let's face it: at 5'2 I need all the help I can get. The key thing to remember when layering, like everything, is to us moderation. Too many layers will make it difficult to get around and may get a bit pricey.

ALL FAIR AND SQUARE

This week's look features Buffalo Check!

Buffalo Check is simple, bold and more exciting than a solid or a plain pattern. I like the versatility of the print how easy it is to wear.

The trend started in Scotland where they were known for their buffalo pelts, hence the name.  The strong red and black squares are designed to reflect the great outdoors. The trend has continued to grow, even making appearances on everything from the classic plaid shirt, to scarves and coats.

As I was styling this look I couldn't help but think: "I hope I don't look like a lumberjack!"

You can avoid looking like Paul Bunyon by choosing pieces that fit closer to the body which accentuates the typical feminine 'hourglass' physique. Keep in mind that every woman has a different shape so you should pick pieces that are flattering to your unique body. Pairing this pattern with delicate accessories helps soften the strong print.  While red and black are the most common shades that are sold, you may find some retailers who sell other patterns that feature colours such as blue, pink, and even purple.

Flower Power of the 70's

This week I decided to push the refresh button on a quintessential 70's trend: Flowers!

Designers have brought back these groovy prints and silhouettes for us to play with - everything from Bell sleeves to floppy hats are available everywhere. These trends are fun but the key is to take in that 'groovy' style without making it look like you just got back from Woodstock.

Here are some things I found learned and found helpful while shopping:

  • Avoid anything with an exaggerated flare. Instead try a lightly loose dress that will hug your curves right but conform to your movements.
  • Fringe on skirts and boots always work well.
  • Try suede to give you that smooth look.
  • Keep it youthful by using colors instead of black.
  • Lastly, leave the skinny jeans on the shelf. The most popular silhouettes this season are wide leg and flared bottoms.  Be sure to balance out the heavier bottom with a fitted top.

Have a great week!

SAVED THE VEST LAYER FOR LAST

Karl Lagerfeld once said:

"You cannot fake chic but you can be chic and fake fur."

I opted for a faux fur vest for this week's look because it is luxurious enough to dress any outfit up but light enough to act as a layer that will keep me warm. This is the perfect piece to reach for when it's too warm for a jacket but cool enough to layer. Your fur vest should be the focal point of your outfit so be sure to keep the rest of your outfit simple so that your vest stands out. Balance is key since all of the volume is on top, the bottom should be sleek and smooth. A classic pencil skirt or leather leggings are what I recommend pairing your vest with because their simplicity balances the gaudiness of the top.

Luckily this piece is available at every price point so it's important to evaluate how much you will wear your fur before investing in the piece.
